Shortly before 1pm, Crews from NSFD were dispatched to assist Andover Fire Dept with a working house fire on Hickory St in Andover. Engine 17-2 and 17-1 responded to the assist. As NSFD units arrived, one engine took the hydrant with the other engine crew beginning a primary search. While a crew from AVFD continued to attack the fire, NSFD searched for victims in near zero visibility in the two story house. During the search, two dogs were located and removed to the front yard and received EMS care. Additional crews from Dept 5 & 20 arrived to assist with secondary search and ventilation.
Considering that FD's were shorthanded due to the time of day and being a weekday, crews worked quickly to make quick work of this fire. The fire was found to have started in the basement and burned up through the kitchen floor. AVFD identified quickly that this was a basement fire and adjusted their tactics. Upon arrival of NSFD, command warned of the hole in the kitchen floor and that crews were operating in the basement. This also played a big part in how the house was searched. Crews operated for a little over an hour before returning to station. Click on thumbnail for photos.
